No 402.

Sir,

C.O.

GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

HONGKONG. 20th October, 1925.

I have the honour to submit for your decision

four queries raised by the Director of Colonial Audit (Reference Sheet No.3/1923 dated 21st November, 1924) regarding Expenditure Credits in the Appropriation Account for the year 1923.

2.

The first query is with reference to the sun of $2,970.31 standing to the credit of Public Works Recurrent, Miscellaneous, Stores Depreciation. This credit is due mainly to rebates on freight obtained by the Crown Agents and should properly be used in writing down the prices of stores but as these stores had already been issued on works and charged in full to the appropriate vote, it would appear to be the only practicable method of accounting to credit the sun received to Stores Depreciation. A similar credit arises in the case of the recovery of the cost of damaged stores. I have to ask your approval of this practice.

3.

The second query deals with a sum of $75.59 which was a deposit made by a Contractor with the Crown Agents in connection with Indent No.38 of 8th April, 1920, for additional pumping engine at Tytantuk, There was no expenditure under that vote during the year and the sum

therefore appeared as a credit. It should normally have

been a "below the line" account but the existence of the

deposit was overlooked.

LIEUTENANT COLONEL L.C.M.S. AIERY, M.P.,
